The Finsbury Park Institute of Football Art
What I’m trying to get at with these paintings is that it is a kind of religious – or at least, spiritual – painting, hence the reference to Eastern Orthodox icons as well as Egyptian funerary art. If you are under 40 you might not know some of these old footballers – but they were once the 70s/80s versions of superstars.
The Finsbury Park Institute of Football Art is not actually in Finsbury Park – It's about eight minutes walk away. And it isn’t really an institute, at least not yet. It’s just that the acronym (FPIFA) looks remarkably similar to that for FIFA, the world governing body for football. What I’m hoping is that people might be looking for the FIFA website in order to make a hosting bid for the World Cup and end up buying one of my football art paintings or prints instead.
Last summer I did an interview with US Soccer Players blog. They wanted to talk about my football art. I like to think I come across as friendly and approachable when I do interviews but when I saw it written down afterwards I fear I might actually be a pretentious loon.
When Saturday Comes magazine sells these paintings through their online shop – and I do quite a few commissions for this kind of painting.
